「Break the Internet（インターネットを壊せ）」とは、あまりにも衝撃的・話題性が高い出来事によって、SNSやネットがパンクするほど注目を集める、という意味の表現です。

全米一のお騒がせセレブとして知られるキム・カーダシアン。

彼女は、自身の豪華すぎる私生活を公開することで一躍有名人となり、その後、歌手のカニエ・ウェストと結婚しました。

カニエ・ウェストもまた賛否両論の多い人物であることから、2人はたびたび話題を振りまくセレブ夫婦として世間に認知されています。

2014年11月、キムは雑誌「PAPER」の表紙を飾った背面フルヌード写真をInstagramで公開しました。
その写真には「#BreakTheInternet（インターネットを壊せ）」というハッシュタグが添えられ、瞬く間にツイッター上で拡散されます。

さらに、フルヌード写真の他に公開された別の画像では、お尻の上にシャンパングラスを乗せ、手に持ったボトルから噴き出すシャンパンをグラスに注ぐという、大胆なポーズを披露し、大きな話題となりました。

ネット上では「どうせフォトショップ（画像加工）でしょ」と批判的な声も上がりましたが、叩かれるだけで終わるかと思いきや、この騒動は単なる炎上で終わりませんでした。

ツイッター上では「#FixTheInternet（インターネットを直せ）」というハッシュタグが登場し、キムのヌード写真を元にしたコラージュ画像やネタ画像が大量に作られる事態に発展。

一方で本人たちは、そうしたムーブメントを気にする様子は見せませんでした。
夫のカニエ・ウェストは「ALLDAY（一日中見ていられるぜ）」とコメントし、支持を表明。

さらに、当時10代で成功を収めていた歌手Lorde（ロード）がツイッターで「mom（ママ）」とだけ返信し、母親としての立場を意識すべきだと示唆したことで、別の意味でも注目を集めました。

Meanwhile, Kim and Kanye appeared unfazed by the movement.

Additionally, singer Lorde, who had achieved major success as a teenager at the time, replied on Twitter with just "mom," implying that Kim should be more mindful of her role as a mother, which sparked further attention.
